Spill Training To Protect Health and Safety While Complying With Government Regulations

 

Course Outline:

This course is appropriate for personnel who work with, or could come across hazardous material in the course of their duties. Course content touches on the various Canadian Legislation and Regulations (Federal and Provincial) governing hazardous materials, identification of HazMat, personal protection equipment, appropriate spill response procedures - both theory and practical. 

Course Objectives:

Knowledge to be acquired:

  • containment and confinement practices for accidental release;
  • preventive controls;
  • selection and use of personal protective equipment;
  • respiratory protection;
  • environmental and physical hazards of chemical spills;
  • use and selection of spill response materials;
  • communication within the team and outside the team

Skills to be acquired:

  • recognizing and assessing hazards;
  • strategies for removing and controlling hazards;
  • operations within a team structure;
  • donning & doffing of personal protective equipment;
  • packaging and labeling spill cleanup material.

After completing this course the attendee will be able to describe the hazards of a spill and how they may cause injury or illness, identify the relevant legislation, standards or guidelines related to the spill and prepare an actin plan to identify, assess and control the spill based on an actual workplace situation. Participants are encouraged to share their own experiences, and the group is taken outside and is shown a simulated spill and how to properly respond.
